Outdoor TVs Vs Indoor TVs
Rethinking Outdoor Entertainment: Why Purpose-Built TVs Matter
After a long winter, we all get the urge to enjoy sunny weather. To make the most of it, you or your customers may want to hook up the TV for additional outdoor entertainment. It may be tempting to grab an extra TV or drag the one from the living room outside — don't. For a more permanent solution and optimal watching experience, an outdoor TV is the way to go, while a standard indoor TV won't cut it.
Have you ever been watching a movie inside and a single ray of sunlight lands on your TV? Suddenly, you are taken out of the suspenseful moment in the movie, and your eyes are drawn to the bright light. Sometimes it gets so bright you can't even see what is on the screen. Now imagine how intense the glare will be if the TV were entirely outside even in a shaded area.
Electronics not made for outdoor environments struggle to operate in extreme temperatures. If left outside its normal operating range, an indoor TV may malfunction, overheat, or suffer from image distortion, permanently damaging the TV and requiring you to replace it.
Water doesn't usually mix with electronics, and a standard TV is not designed to come into contact with the elements. If you leave an indoor TV outside, it can be exposed to rain, condensation, or snow, which can damage the screen and its internal components.
Depending on the outdoor space, dust, dirt, high winds, debris, and more can damage electronics, disrupt entertainment, or wear down components, shortening their lifespan.
Although warranties vary by product, generally speaking, you may void the warranty on an indoor TV if you use it outside for prolonged periods.
Outdoor TVs are built with specialized technology and durable construction to handle these conditions. For prolonged, reliable, and enjoyable outdoor entertainment, outdoor TVs are the only way to go.
Outdoor TVs have higher nits, which means brighter screens that can negate or minimize screen glare. Depending on the placement of the TV, ~500 nits is sufficient for full-shade areas such as covered patios and porches. Partial-shade areas (gazebos, under trees, or partially covered spaces) receive less intense sunlight, which can still wash out screens, so ~700–1,000-nit displays help combat glare. Full-sun spaces, including uncovered decks and pool areas, require ~1,000–1,500+-nit screens to deliver a vibrant picture in the most intense lighting conditions.
Every electronic device has an ideal operating temperature range for the system to operate efficiently. If a device is taken outside of this range, you can experience performance degradation, malfunctioning components, and even permanent damage to the device. Some indoor TVs can operate in about ~50°F–90°F environments without being damaged, while outdoor TVs can operate within ~-24°F–122°F conditions. Outdoor TVs can also feature heat dispersion technology which may help prevent isotropic blackouts, in which the liquid crystals in the screen reach a high enough temperature to stop functioning properly. This can be the result of intense direct sunlight or overheating the TV.
There are several ways an outdoor TV can prevent its electrical components from coming into contact with water. Many outdoor TVs have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they are guarded against water and additional unwanted particles through IP (Ingress Protection) testing. Depending on the devices' IP rating, they have been tested to operate safely under certain conditions. In addition to higher IP ratings, outdoor TVs can have enclosed media bays for extra protection against the elements while offering additional cable management. Weatherproof gaskets also help seal outlets, keeping them dry.
